Progressive cavity pumps, also known as progressing cavity pumps or rotary lobe pumps, can be run in either direction which makes them reversible. The pumping mechanism of a progressive cavity pump consists of a rotor (single helix screw) and a stator (double helix gyrating cavity). As the rotor turns within the stator, the cavities cause the progressive capture and transport of pumped fluid.

When rotated in one direction, the rotor pushes the fluid through the pump from the inlet to the outlet in a continuous, smooth flow. However, turning the rotor in the opposite direction will cause the progressive cavity pump to operate in reverse, pulling fluid from the outlet side back towards the inlet in a similar manner.

This reversible nature provides several operational advantages. It allows for stripping or draining fluids from suction lines back into storage tanks. It also enables easy self-priming when the pump is turned briefly in reverse to fill its cavities before operating in the normal forward direction.
