In colder regions beginning seeds indoors may be an alternative.
About six weeks prior to the date of the last frost in your region soak the sugar pea seeds for at least 24 hours or cut off the seed coat using nail clipper or a sharp blade to ensure that the seeds will germinate more easily.
Because sweet peas don't like transplants so grow them in https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lily-plant-identification/id1570145257 peat pots that can be planted in the soil outdoors, without causing any disturbance to the roots. They break down in the soil.
Three seeds should be sown per 3 inches pot, approximately 1/2 inch deep in a general pot that are designed for potting.
After they've germinated, and grown to approximately 4 inches tall Cut off the weaker two plants. Cut instead of pulling so that you do not risk damaging the roots that are strung up.
If the seedlings are able to grow 4 leaf sets, you can pinch their growth edge to encourage branches to develop.
When temperatures remain above freezing in the evening and the sun is shining, you can plant sweet peas outdoors.
Before you plant each pot, take care to break up the top layer inside the peat pot to ensure it doesn't protrude above the ground level and drain moisture away from the root.
Sweet pea seeds can be directly sown outside
The ideal time to grow sweet peas outside will depend on your region's typical winter weather. If the weather is pleasant with temperatures, plant sweet pea seeds during the fall If it's cold and the temperatures drop below freezing for extended durations, wait until spring, but start planting at the earliest time you can get the soil working. Whatever the case it's recommended to prepare the bed during the fall.
The sweet peas are planted with manure
Here's an old-fashioned plant method that is able to meet sweet pea's difficulties. This method warms the soil to allow it to sprout the seeds, even though the temperature is moderate enough for keeping growing plants content. Furthermore, since it puts high-quality nutrients in the soil beneath them, this stimulates the growth of roots that can enable the plants to endure the heat well into the summer.
Manure is the most important ingredient. When the fall is in its final stages, around the time that you plant the spring bulbs, pick an area with sun to plant your pea garden. Make a trench that is 24 inches. deep, as wide and long as you wish your bed. Then add an 18- to 20-in. layer of fresh horse manure pressing it down using the shovel to eliminate air pockets.
Make sure to cover the bed with a mixture consisting of half compost with half soil. As the soil warms up to about 50 degrees in spring, bacteria begin digesting manure, creating the heat needed for germination. Also, it provides an abundance of fertilizer to stimulate deep roots that aid the plant in surviving summer's temperatures.
Once the ground is ready to be worked in the spring, sprinkle the seeds that are soaked or nicked approximately 2 inches. apart in an 2-in.-deep trench. The germination process takes between 10 and 14 days in 55 to 65-degree soil.
Seedlings that are thin to 6 inches. apart when they're about 4 in. tall. The plants can tolerate with a slight frost, however when a cold snap is expected, consider using the row cover or cloches, particularly at night, to guard against the possibility of a severe freeze.
It is possible to do this very early in spring too, but you should use old manure from horses instead of fresh manure, which could cause the roots to be burned. When the plan is to make the trench during the autumn, the manure will have been older by the time that you plant it in spring.

Aphids that cause crinkled leaves and disfigured blossoms are treated by spraying insecticide soap on plants once every two weeks or blasting them by spraying them with water.
